Winter Consumer rights

From December 1st through March 31st residence of Illinois have additional rights and protections related to public utilities supplying there home heat through gas or electric.  I haven’t found the original artical on the Attorney Generals web site yet.  However a Chicago area company posted a good overview of these rights on there web site.

Ultimately it boils down to the following.

  • Your utility has to notify you in a appropriate and timely manner
  • They need to give you payment options or suggest payment plans
  • Even then, they can not turn your heat off if it’s likely to drop below 32 degrees Fahrenheit in the next 24 hours or during a holiday weekend.

As I track down more information I will post here.

Man, do people really use this???

More then you think, especially when the economy is in a down turn. If you lost your job and falling behind on bills this law can help you get through the winter at least. If that’s all you need to get back on your feet, all the better.

The main thing is that the utilities have to work with you and it’s something to remember.
